The Northern Stakeholders Consultative Initiative (NSCI) has raised concern over what it describes as a “disturbing and orchestrated campaign of calumny” against the Minister of State for Defense, Mohammad Bello Matawalle, calling on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to remain firm in retaining the minister in his cabinet.
In a statement signed by its Convener, Yerima Shettima, the group said the negative campaign intensified shortly after the resignation of former Minister of Defence, Mohammed Badaru Abubakar. According to the NSCI, the attacks appear to be calculated efforts by political detractors to weaken the administration’s strong support base in Northern Nigeria as the 2027 elections approach.
Shettima noted that under Matawalle’s leadership, the Ministry of State for Defense has made “concerted strides in addressing insecurity, promoting peace, and restoring confidence among communities across the North.” He added that the minister’s contributions to strengthening national security have earned him deep respect across the region.
The NSCI warned that attempts to discredit Matawalle are part of a broader plot to create division, undermine the President’s political foothold, and sow disunity within the administration. Removing Matawalle, the group argued, would embolden those seeking to destabilize the region and fracture the bond between the Presidency and Northern communities.
“We believe these attacks are politically motivated and not in the interest of the region or the nation,” the statement read. “Matawalle has been a steadfast pillar of support for the administration, and standing by him at this critical time is essential to preserving stability.”
The group urged President Tinubu to disregard the smear campaigns and maintain his confidence in the minister. It also called on Nigerians, especially the media, to verify information before publication, to avoid amplifying misleading narratives targeted at public officials.
As the nation moves closer to another election cycle, the group emphasized the need for unity and vigilance. “Northern Nigeria’s strength lies in collective resolve,” Shettima said, urging stakeholders to resist attempts aimed at causing division.
